Richard Lewis (Dick) Hummel Richard Lewis (Dick” Hummel, age 72, of Delavan passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 11, 2015. He was born in Elkhorn, Wisconsin on June 16, 1942 to Robert and Helen (Schafbuch) Hummel. He graduated from Delavan-Darien High School in 1961, and entered the Air Force. Upon discharge from military service, he returned to the family farm. Growing up, the Walworth Co. Fair was an important part of his life; showing animals and exhibiting crops and is also where he met his wife, Dianne. They were married in February 1962. He is survived by his wife, Dianne (Nichols) Hummel of Delavan; three daughters, Shannon Lupini of Neosho, MO, Stephanni Stronach of Darien, and Samantha (Tim) Lange of Cobb; three grandchildren, who he loved and adored, Mackenzie Stronach, Madison Stronach, and Noah Lange; his sister, Mary (Ray) Scott of Clinton; and other dear relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by both of his parents. One of his favorite past times included attending sporting events, especially to watch his grandchildren compete. He was a faithful supporter of events at DDHS and loved to watch he Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers Play. Dick loved anything to do with animals and his farm north of Delavan served as a place for suburban FFA or 4-H members to raise their projects. Dick held various jobs throughout his life, many revolved around driving ; school buses, ambulance, chartered trips, and later was passionate about delivering eyes to Milwaukee for transplants. Volunteer work was Dick’s life. He was a member of the Delavan Lions Club for 40 years. He held many offices over the years and will be remembered for being Chairman of the Corn Stand at the Walworth County Fair for many, many, years and wearing his green wig at the annual Corned Beef and Cabbage dinners. Dick was honored and proud to serve as Zone Chairman for District 27-A1 and held various positions for the Walworth Co. Eye Bank. Dick was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Dick was also a member of the American Legion Post 95, D-D FFA Alumni, and the Delavan Historical Society. Dick loved gardening and growing vegetables and had a huge garden for many years. He took great delighted canning salsa and pickles with Stephanni and Madison. He was active in the D-D FFA Alumni and loved to assist the FFA in the greenhouse. He had an appreciation for growing flowers and plants. At the age of 60, he surprised his family by getting his ear pierced and purchasing a Harley. He loved riding, feeling the closeness to nature, stating that he found a beauty in the earth that one cannot gain from riding in a car. A Memorial Gathering will be held from 4:00 to 7:00p.m. on Friday, April 17, at the Betzer Funerall Home in Delavan. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 18, at 11:00a.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, in Delavan, with the Rev. Robert P. Rickman officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall.
